Volume 1
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of two scrapbooks that include newspaper clippings documenting the storm and aftermath of the aftermath of the Hurricane of 1938 in Rhode Island. This collection was presumably compiled and donated by William J. Briston, of Providence, RI, whose name appears on the front cover of both volumes.
Content is included from the Providence Journal (including the Providence Sunday Bulletin and Eventing Bulletin) the Pawtucket Press, and the Boston Herald between September 22, 1938 (the day after the hurricane hit Rhode Island) and ending October 17, 1938. The clippings highlight human interest stories, but also the cost of the damage and the number of people dead, missing and injured, damage to physical property and the shoreline, and donations to the Red Cross for victims of the storm.
Of note, due to damage at the Providence Journal the Sept 27 Evening Bulletin (Providence Journal) was printed on the press of the Boston Post and the Oct 2 Providence Sunday Journal was printed on the press of the Woonsocket Call.
