Reunion Programs, 2001
Scope and Contents
Series 2, Fox Point Boys & Girls Club, is arranged into 4 subseries: Photos (2.1), Printed materials (2.2), Reunion Programs (2.3), and Discipline Ledger (2.4). Note, access to subseries Discipline Ledger (2.4) is restricted until 2045. The Fox Point Boys & Girls Club is the oldest continually operating club of its kind in the country, having been founded in 1868 as the Union for Christian Work and becoming the Providence Boys Club in 1899, and was formerly located at South Main and Powers Streets. The Club, an integral community hub, was demolished as part of the urban renewal projects of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1973, led by Marcus Andrade, at the time the president of the Boys Club Alumni Association, a deal was struck for a new location, averting an attempted shutdown. A new Club was opened in 1978 at its current location of 90 Ives St; this space also houses the Fox Point Senior Center and the Fox Point Community Library. It wasn’t until 1981 that the Fox Point Boys Club would officially become known as the Boys & Girls Club. See also: subseries 1.3, Tommy Gomes Photos.
