United Nations Photo of Cape Verde, 1974

 File — Box: 20, Folder: 425

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Series 3, Cape Verdean Community, is arranged into 3 subseries: Photographs (3.1), Printed materials (3.2), and Oling Jackson Photography (3.3). The subseries Oling Jackson Photography is further organized by Photographs (3.3.1) and Slides (3.3.2). Fox Point’s Cape Verdean community is one of the oldest and largest in the United States. Oling R. Jackson (1927-2003) was a well-respected figure and activist in the Fox Point Cape Verdean community, as well as a skilled photographer. He was Chairman of the RI Friends of the Ernestina-Morrissey and Director of the Providence/Praia Sister City Committee, Inc. Mr. Jackson frequently visited Cape Verde in the 70s and 80s and he documented these trips through numerous photographs, including a trip in 1975 when Cape Verde finally received its independence from Portugal’s colonial rule. He often presented at local cultural festivals and events; some of the material here was created in conjunction with these presentations and slideshows and is labeled as such.
