Calligraphic alphabet writing book
Scope and Contents
The collection includes one volume of an early 19th century writing book, possibly an exercise book or as an example of penmanship. Each leaf has a rendition of two letters of the alphabet, decorated and shaded, with another version of the same letter and the lower case version below.

Biographical / Historical
Handwriting and penmanship were an important aspect of education and status through the late 19th century. Signature handwriting styles became associated with various professions and social ranks. Most education included copying and rote practice for students to perfect letting style. It was not until the mid 19th century that a standardized version of penmanship became normalized in America.
