Biographical / Historical

Alfred Gagnon was a tattoo artist, cartoonist, and commercial artist who lived with his parents in Manchester, New Hampshire for most of his life. He seems to have begun tattooing in the mid-1920s and advertised as a professional tattoo artist from 1930 to 1947 in Manchester directories. Photographs in the collection depict him in a wheelchair, and due to his limited mobility he operated his tattoing and painting businesses from the first floor of his parents' home. Gagnon also suffered from arthritic in his hands, which was likely the reason he stopped tattoing in 1947.
