Biographical / Historical

Burton Shellenbach (1908-1992) lived in the Edgewood neighborhood of Cranston, Rhode Island in 1937 and worked as a copywriter for an advertising agency. At the time of his donation in 1959, he worked for H.K. Porter Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Hillsgrove State Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island was originally built in 1931 and expanded runways were constructed in 1935 by the Civilian Works Administration. Additional terminals and hangars were added soon after. The airport was renamed the Theodore Francis Green State Airport in 1938 in honor of Green, governor of Rhode Island from 1933-1937, and U.S. Senator, 1937-1961.
