Bulk of letters are from William Francis Darrah to his brother Rufus E. Darrah (1861-1916 ), a physician of Newport, during William’s time aboard the USS Kearsage and describe his travels in ports of interest.

Biographical / Historical

William Francis Darrah (1862- ) was born Fall River, Massachusetts to Rufus and Elisa Darrah. He served in the U.S. Navy. He served as a mate on the U.S.S. Kearsage, a sloop-of-war during the Civil War. In August 1883, it set out for a three year cruise of the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the west coast of Africa.
