Biographical / Historical
President Andrew Jackson toured New England in June 1833 shortly after his second inauguration. The tour was done at the invitation of New England Democrats and was distinctly political. In Providence, a local committee was established in May 1833 to plan the logistics for his visit on June 20, 1833. The committee included seven prominent Providence men including James Fenner, Thomas Poynton Ives, Richmond Bullock, Walter Raleigh Danforth, Franklin Cooley, Nathaniel Wheaton, Dr. W. H. Allen.
President Jackson visited Newport, Rhode Island on June 19, 1833 and traveled to Providence on June 20, 1833 by steamer accompanied by his entourage including the Vice President, Secretary of War, and Secretary of the Navy. His arrival at Providence was announced by a discharge from the Marine Artillery at Fox Point followed by a procession through downtown Providence to the City Hotel. His itinerary for the day was full including four hours to meet the crowds, a dinner with honored guests, an early evening tour of Providence on horseback, an address to the students at Brown University and a ladies reception in the evening. The following morning of June 21, 1833, he was escorted by a procession to Pawtucket where he met with Samuel Slater and was received at the Massachusetts line where an artillery salute broke so many windows in Pawtucket that the State was responsible for providing replacement glass.
