Scope and Contents

The album contains photographic portraits of 260 Rhode Island lawyers and judges from the past up to 1899. According to an inscription in the album, it was presented as a gift by G.M. Grant to Francis Colwell Esq. on 23 February 1899. This date corresponds with Colwell's appointment as the first President of the Rhode Island Bar Association.

Biographical / Historical

"Francis Colwell (1833-1906) was a Rhode Island lawyer who served as the City Solicitor of Providence and served as the first president of the Rhode Island Bar Association in 1899. Francis Colwell was born 7 Apr 1833 in Cranston, RI to Francis Colwell, and Harriet B. Tucker Colwell. He was married to Anna Frances Packard Colwell (1837 - 1920) and had one child, Augusta Antony Colwell (1870 - 1872). Colwell died on 7 Apr 1906 in Providence and is buried at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.

G.M. Grant gifted this photo album to the Rhode Island Bar Association in April, 1899. According to a newspaper article related to the event, Grant was from New York City, however, more research will need to be done to further identify them.
