Biographical / Historical

The ship America II was built in Philadelphia in 1811. Known as the America, it was renamed the America II, possibly in 1849. The vessel made a total of eight whaling voyages. The first five whaling voyages were out of Hudson, New York from 1830-1842 after which it was under the management of agent Charles P. Williams in Stonington, Connecticut for two voyages from 1842 and 1844. Subsequently the vessel was sold to New Bedford from which it made one whaling voyage in 1850 which ended when the ship was crushed in the ice in the Anadir Sea in 1851. This collection includes the records of the two voyages made under agent Charles P. Williams out of Stonington, Connecticut. The voyage of 1842-1844 was under Master George Hubbard Jr. and the voyage of 1844-1847 was under Master Ellery Nash.
