This collection includes 56 items, chiefly business correspondence, related to the John Turner's business investments and shares in various whaling voyages out of New London, Connecticut for vessels including the McDonough, Palladium, Mentor, Spark and Indian Chief.

Biographical / Historical
John Turner (1771-1858) of Colchester, Connecticut was a merchant. He was married to Sabra (Tinker) Turner and they had two daughters. He invested in several whaling voyages, but also owned land in Michigan and other western states.
The main correspondents include business agenta Ephraim M. and Adam M. Frink of New London, Connecticut as well as John's brother James Turner (1781-1859) and his son Peregrine Turner (1819-1885).

This collection of 56 pieces was bought by Stuart Sherman in 1957 from Charles B. Vincent, a dealer in books, papers Americana, and paintings located at Groton, CT.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Purchased by Providence Public Library, 1957 for the Nicholson Whaling Collection.
Processing Information
Previously part of general Nicholson Whaling Manuscript Collection, Subgroup 27. Processing by Judith Lund in 2008 with additions made to the finding aid by Janaya Kizzie in 2014. The decision to reprocess the subgroups as individual collections was made by Jordan Goffin in 2018. The collection was reprocessed by Kate Wells in 2024.
