Scope and Contents

The Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America collection consists of 14 items including pamphlets, newsletters, newspapers and article reprints printed in Rhode Island between 1914-2002. Several items provide interesting information about the response of the organization to their response to larger regional and national topics throughout the 20th century including the 1938 Hurricane, World War II, their formal relationship with the Protestant church, and a tracking of their history with Camp Yawgoog, still in existence.

Biographical / Historical

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated in 1910. The Rhode Island Boy Scouts were organized on September 6, 1910 and chartered under state laws on April 13, 1911 as an affiliation of the national program. The Rhode Island Boy Scouts were formally merged with the national Boy Scouts of America in 1917 and the Greater Providence Council Boy Scouts of America was formed to take over the operation of the Scouting Program and supervision of troops. The National Council Boy Scouts of America also agreed that the Rhode Island Boy Scouts could maintain its corporate identity so that it could continue to receive bequests, hold funds and properties and acquire other funds and properties in the future; thus, the formation of Rhode Island Boy Scouts as a Trustee organization.

In 1929 and 1930, the Greater Providence Council Boy Scouts of America merged with the Newport County Council, the Pawtucket-Central Falls Council and the Woonsocket Council to form the Narragansett Council which was headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island. The Council has operated eight summer camps including Camp Aquapaug, Buck Hill Scout Reservation, Camp Buxton, Cub World at Buck Hill, Cachalot Scout Reservation, Champlin Scout Reservation, Sandsland, and Camp Yawgoog.

In 2001, the Narragansett Council merged with the Moby Dick Council of New Bedford, Massachusetts.
