Biographical / Historical
Bonnie L. Simon (1958-2023) was born in Queens, NY and moved to Rhode Island in 1976. She attended Rhode Island School of Design for one year then worked in silkscreening and graphic design in San Franscisco, California. Simon worked as Art Director for On Our Backs magazine which merged with Girlfriends.
After returning to Rhode Island, she founded Get Magazine in 2006 as a free alternative publication to serve the local LGBTQ+ community. She also worked as the producer and creative director. The magazine's name came from an inside joke with her R.I. friends who often used the phrase “Get me!” as in "do you get me?". This was shortened to "Get?" and became the reason for name of the magazine.
