Universal Winding Company of Rhode Island newsletters & ephemera collection

Collection — Box: Multi-Collection (space available)
Identifier: 138-01

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 52 issues of the Universal Winding Company of Rhode Island's monthly company newsletter, “The Windings” from 1945-1952. Issues are nonconsecutive and incomplete, with different formats over the years. The newsletter comprised announcements from different company departments as well as its recreational offerings, including the company bowling and softball leagues and gardening efforts. Volume 1, Issue 1 (May 1945) discusses the War Bond Drive. The collection also includes two typed and signed letters from the General Office of the company to its employees (Universal Service Men and Women).

The collection provides insight into what internal company relations and internal marketing in the 1940s and 1950s might look like, especially for a company contracted in the war effort.

Biographical / Historical

The Universal Winding Company of Rhode Island, notable for its trademarked Leesona brand winding machinery and bobbins, was formed in 1893 by Joseph Leeson. Although fabricated to wind both natural and synthetic fibers, the Company’s winding machinery was also adapted for use in electronics such as radios and motors. Furthermore, the Company’s winding machinery and manufacturing plant was used to assemble guns, military radios, and tactical parts for war, a contract initiated by Joseph Leeson’s grandson Robert Leeson in World War I. The Company was the first textile machinery manufacturer to take up the war effort under its Cranston Arms subsidiary, whose military contracts continued after WWI. In 1959, the Universal Winding Company changed its name to Leesona Corporation and shifted its product focus towards the synthetic fiber industry in 1982, and also relocated its headquarters to Burlington, North Carolina.
