Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 4 boxes containing 182 photographs, and 4 cardboard prints created by D.M. Dalton in 1978. The photographs in the collection showcase historic Providence buildings built between the late 1700s and 1920s. Many different architecture styles are represented including buildings designed by Rhode Island architects Frederick E. Field and William R. Walker and Son. The black-and-white photographs of buildings include close-ups of exterior and interior architectural details. The College Hill and Downtown Providence geographic areas are heavily represented in the collection as are various churches and the Rhode Island State House.

Biographical / Historical

Douglas M. Dalton is a Rhode Island native born August 8, 1947. He received a BA with Honors from Middlebury College in 1969 and his BFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1974.

The D.M. Dalton Architectural photographs are organized into a single series. The photographs are organized in numerical order in four boxes. Thirteen numbered images are missing from the collection including 3, 14, 72, 74, 77, 109-111, 116, 135, 150-151, 180.
