Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a line-a-day diary of Dorothy Hackney kept while she lived in Providence and Dobbs Ferry, New York during the years of the First World War. The diary represents the musings and activities of a young female student from an upper class family who lived on the East Side of Providence. Prominent Providence families are mentioned throughout the years such as Chapin, Herreshoff, Allen and Rathbun. The bulk of the diary describes her social life, school, friends and experience as part of the war effort including her volunteer work for the French Wounded and the Red Cross.

Biographical / Historical

Dorothy Hackney (1901-1978), born in Providence to Walter P. Hackney, treasurer of a fire extinguisher company, and his wife, Clara Child. The family lived at 231 George Street, Providence. She was educated at the Wheeler School, Dobbs Ferry Masters School in Westchester County, NY and Brown University. She married Stanley H. Smith, an attorney, who died in 1953. She owned the Town and Country Dress Shop in Providence. Dorothy passed away April 17, 1978 and is buried with her husband at Swan Point Cemetery.
