Biographical / Historical

Joseph Banigan (1839-1898) was born in Ireland. Escaping the potato famine, he arrived in the United States in 1847. He went on to become a rubber magnate and Rhode Island’s first Irish-Catholic millionaire. He was an active philanthropist and served on many boards. He built the Banigan Building, known as Providence’s first skyscraper, at 10 Weybosset Street in 1896 as his headquarters.

His first house at Angell Street and Wayland Avenue, built in 1875, was moved to 9 Orchard Street. The mansion depicted in this album was built on the site in 1897 by architects Martin and Hall. Banigan died the following year and the house was left to his widow. It was demolished in 1921 so that Wayland Manor, an apartment building, could be built.
