Scope and Contents

Collection consists of one volume including newspaper and periodical clippings, trade cards, photographs, invitations, menu, etc, 1870s-1920s, adhered to pages of business ledger (circa 1850). Circular label on front cover is tattered and handwriting on it is very faded but it appears to read “Name W.E. Chappell / Residence 757 4th St / Position in S.S. In the hole / COMPLETE / NATIONAL - LODGE ETC.”

Biographical / Historical

William E. Chappell (1846-1928) was born in Massachusetts, moved to Providence by 1870, and married Adeline L. Smalley in 1871. He worked as a machinist and later became a self-employed florist. He was active in the Florists and Gardeners Club of Rhode Island. For decades, he lived and/or worked at 38 Flora Street and 333 Branch Avenue, addresses in very close proximity to each other. At the end of his life, he lived at 747 4th Street.
