Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one album given to Jesse H. Metcalf in celebration of Walter R. Callender on January 12, 1910 at the Hope Club in Providence, Rhode Island. A menu for the event notes “To Walter Reid Callender, the Big Cop, by the member of his baseball and stung cabinet”. Includes photographs of various Providence businessmen and politicians with humorous descriptions of each individual as criminals.

Biographical / Historical

Walter Reid Callender (1872-1932) was a lifelong resident of Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Yale University with an undergraduate degree in 1894 and with a graduate degree in English literature in 1897. He then began working for his father’s wholesale and retail business, Callender, McAuslan and Troup Co. (also known as the Boston Store), in Providence. In 1921, Callender was elected president and treasurer of the company, dual roles he held until his death. Callender served on many boards and was a member in many clubs locally and nationally. He was particularly dedicated to the Providence Public Library where he was a benefactor and a trustee. As an adult, he lived at his family’s home at 1509 Westminster Street until he married Ivy M. Eddinger in 1927. The couple then lived at 196 Hope Street. They had no children.

Below is a list of men included in this album. The majority of them served on multiple boards of directors and were members of several clubs.

Joseph Balch (1860-1920) was the national bank examiner for the Providence Institution of Savings and served as President of the Providence City Council and Board of Aldermen.

Nelson Stuart Campbell (1881-1953) worked for Wanskuck Mills and was married to Elsie Aldrich, daughter of U.S. Senator Nelson W. Aldrich.

Daniel Farrington George (1871-1940) was the private secretary to Mayor William C. Baker, worked for New Haven Steamboat Company, and then the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company.

Lauriston Hartwell Hazard (1866-1937) was treasurer of the Hazard Cotton Company, president of Butler Hospital and served on the State Board of Parole and Providence School Committee.

Bertrand J. Horton (1863-1936) founded the The Queen Dyeing Company.

Frederick Roy Martin (1871-1952) was editor and treasurer of Providence Journal Company and then Director of Associated Press.

Charles Baldwin MacKinney ( 1876?-1962) was secretary of Starkweather and Shepley Inc and chaired the Board of Park commissioners. He was a founding member of the National Fire Protective Association.

Thomas Francis Irving McDonnell (1868-1939) was a partner in the firm of Lyman and McDonnell and active civic leader.

Jesse H. Metcalf (1860-1942) was an agent at Wanskuck Mills and served on the Providence Common Council, RI State House of Representatives,United States Senate.

Pardon S. Miller(1867-1923) was a partner in the firm of Miller and George.

John Revelstoke Rathom (1868-1923) was the managed editor of the Providence Journal and on the Board of Directors for the Associated Press.

Henry W. Roth (1862?-1937?) was an agent for George H. McFadden and Bros cotton merchants.

Henry Weston Sackett (1872-1934) worked in brokerage and private banking including many years with Richardson and Clark.

Brockholst Mathewson Smith (1881-1968) was the treasurer of Ralph C. Watrous Co.

Walter Knight Sturges (1876-1913) oversaw the estate of Benjamin B. Knight and served on Providence City Council.

Robert Wendell Taft (1868-1934) was the son of Governor Royal C. Taft and the treasurer of Coventry Company and banker at Merchants National Bank.

Byron S. Watson (1876-1947) worked for Green, Anthony and Co and served as colonel on Governor Charles Dean
