Scope and Contents

The collection includes the records of two whaling voyages of the schooner E. H. Hatfield including articles of agreement, correspondence, crew lists, bills and receipts and crew accounts. The papers were originally found in a sea chest which is now part of the Nicholson Whaling Artifacts Collection.

Ship's Papers of Emma Jane (Schooner) of Edgartown

Scope and Contents

The collection includes records of all five of the voyages of the Emma Jane while Osborn was agent of the ship. These materials include shipping papers, correspondence, crew lists, bills & receipts and crew accounts. In particular, there are bills and receipts related to the condition of the vessel and repairs related to hurricane damage as well as the condemnation and sale after the final voyage.

The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters from Henry Beetle to his fiancée and later wife, Eliza Eaton Beetle, written while he was onboard ship during several whaling voyages. This collection contains minimal documentation for the first and last voyages of the Lion, with better, though decidedly incomplete, documentation for the middle two voyages from Providence. Papers include correspondence, bills and receipts, gauges of oil, financial records including interest and deposits, crew lists and expenses, stockholders’ meeting minutes, and legal documents.

Aaron Lopez papers

Scope and Contents This collection contains correspondence, bills and notes, and shipping receipts including for various provisions such as dry goods, preserved beef, women’s shoes, spermaceti candles and oil, rum and pitch. Of particular interest is a letter of apology to Lopez from his son-in-law, Abraham Pereira Mendes, that notes, “I have so inhumanly assaulted and cruely treated [Lopez}…past follies…being so numerous and heinous…” which followed a family disagreement between Mendes and Lopez....
