Biographical / Historical

The Dailey family of Providence, Rhode Island were active in the business and social life of the city during the 19th century. Albert Dailey (1819-1877) was a businessman with various mercantile interests including lumber, mining, railroads, and steamships. Mrs. Charlotte F. Dailey (1820-1885) was a Providence reformer and socialite. In 1862-1863, she was assigned by Governor Sprague to report on the condition of sick and disabled Rhode Island soldiers during the Civil War. She was active in Providence literary and cultural society and served as the caretaker and literary executor of poet Sarah Helen Whitman and on the RI State Board of Commissioners for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. The Dailey’s had four children including Charlotte (Lottie), Albert, Martin and Maude.
