Biographical / Historical

The Bark Clarice was built in 1823 in Scarborough, Maine. It made a total of fourteen whaling voyages. From 1835 to 1870, the vessel was based in New Bedford, Massachusetts from which it made its first eleven voyages. The last three whaling voyages were made under the ownership of Samuel Osborn Jr. of Edgartown, Massachusetts. Osborn began building a fleet of whaling ships in 1870 and by 1880 was the largest shipping agent of whaling property in the United States.

The voyages under Osborn included 1871-1875 and 1875-1878 both under the command of Master Cornelius M. Marchant (1826-1885) and 1878-1882 under command of Master Frederick A. Smith (1828-1891) who left the ship in was replaced by Master Francis W. Vincent. During the last voyage the ship was condemned at St. Helena in 1882.
