Biographical / Historical
Leonard Hammond (1789-1864) of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts was a shipbuilder and businessman, whaling agent and owner. He was responsible for building the Schooner Franklin, Bark Franklin, Brig Potomac, Bark R.L. Barstow and Bark Clara Belle. He ran a salt works and owned the Plymouth County House, a tavern on Water Street. He held the contract with the Federal government to build Ned’s Point light in 1836.

Processing Information
Previously part of general Nicholson Whaling Manuscript Collection, Subgroup 22. Processing by Judith Lund in 2008 with additions made to the finding aid by Janaya Kizzie in 2014. The decision to reprocess the subgroups as individual collections was made by Jordan Goffin in 2018. The collection was reprocessed by Angela DiVeglia in 2021.
