Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the papers of the Arnold family, chiefly letters, but also circulars, invitations and other ephemera, dating from 1861 to 1904. Letters of the Arnold family consist mainly of personal correspondence. In some cases a family member held an office and their professional correspondence is also included.

Biographical / Historical

Russell Greene Arnold (1796-1868) was born March 16, 1796 in Warwick, Rhode Island to Anthony and Eunice Arnold. He married Sarah Philips (Whipple) Arnold (1809-1880) on July 4, 1830. Sarah was born on July 10, 1809 to parents Job and Ruth Whipple. They had eight children, however, only five of them survived into adulthood. Their children included Henry Augustus (1831-1833), Mary Eliza Arnold (1832-1833), Henry Anthony (1834-1896), James Rhodes (1837-1838), Frederick Augustus (1841-1926), Edwin Whipple (1844-1904), George Russell (1847-1910), and Susan S. (Arnold) Gorton (d.1867). The family lived at 113 Friendship Street in Providence, Rhode Island. Russell G. Arnold died on March 26 1868.

Henry Anthony Arnold (1834-1893) was born September 26, 1834. According to the 1880 US Census, he was a store clerk. Margaret (Curry) Arnold (b. 1845) was married to Henry A. Arnold. He died on September 8, 1893.

Frederick Augustus Arnold (1841-1924) was the son of Russell G. Arnold and Sarah P. Arnold born March 21, 1841. He served as Secretary for the Second Regiment Rhode Island Voluntary Infantry Veteran Association and a member of several other veteran’s associations. He was also a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society. He died August 8, 1924.

Louisa (St. Armand) Arnold was married to Edwin Whipple Arnold. They married on August 17, 1865. General Olney Arnold (1822-1900) was a resident of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and served in the Pawtucket Light Guard during the Civil War. In that role he served as aide to Gov. William Sprague and was responsible for training the militia. He was also the president of the First National Bank. The connection between Olney Arnold and the family of Russell G. Arnold and Sarah P. Arnold is not known.

Frank G. Tibbitts (b. 1837) was the nephew of Sarah P. Arnold. At time of military enlistment in the Union army, he was living in Manlius NY and working as a dentist. Mary Whipple was the niece of Sarah P. Arnold.

The collection is organized alphabetically by family member (recipient or author) and is arranged chronologically. Correspondence between family members is located with the family member who is the author, with a reference to the letter in the recipient’s series. In addition, the collection also includes Series XI: Miscellaneous, a small series of papers that were with the collection but could not be attributed to a specific family member.
