Scope and Contents

The collection includes oral history recordings of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people in Rhode Island. The interviews document experiences related to identity including sexuality, gender identity and expression, race and ethnicity as well as art & creative expression, dating, marriage and families, activism, religious faith, social life and occupations.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Virginia Thomas is a scholar of American Studies who completed her PhD at Brown University in 2020 with a focus on race, gender and sexuality in U.S. culture and history. She created and managed the Queer Stories Project in 2019 and 2020 to document queer history in Rhode Island. The project served two purposes: first, to train LGBTQIA young adults in oral history practices, and second, to record oral history interviews with LGBTQIA adults in Rhode Island.
